Role Description
Matterworks is seeking a software engineer to join our growing engineering team. You will play a critical role in developing the software platform supporting our next-generation ML-powered metabolomics tools.
Along with our engineering team members, you will collaborate with the internal marketing team and customers to define requirements for customer-facing applications. You will develop software to meet these technical and user-experience requirements. As a pioneering member of the software engineering team, you will be integral to how we mature our tooling, best practices, and engineering processes, as well as the team itself, to support the advancement and adoption of our technology.
This is a unique opportunity to help build a first-of-its-kind digital platform from the ground up. Working closely with our chemistry, ML/AI, and marketing teams, you will grow your technical expertise and leadership, and play a key role in delivering an innovative platform that will advance scientific research and discovery.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, implement, and support product and platform infrastructure hosted on AWS
- Build customer-facing apps and services for managing and running experiments, executing ML models, exploring large-scale datasets, and controlling hardware
- Participate in the full software development lifecycle: defining, planning, implementing, and testing features and stories
- Architect apps and services to support the continuous growth of our product capabilities for an expanding customer base
- Develop enterprise capabilities, e.g. identity, authorization, and data access
- Develop large-scale data ingestion and management platforms
- Collaborate with our marketing team, customers’ IT departments, and other software engineers to define and iterate on software requirements
About You
- 2-8 years of professional experience as a backend software engineer
- Proficiency in cloud computing (major cloud platform, ideally AWS), virtualization, and microservices architectures
- Practical knowledge of agile testing methodologies, such as FDD, TDD, and BDD
- Exposure to software engineering methodologies and best practices
- Experience contributing to the architecture and design of both new and existing systems
- Demonstrated understanding of at least one modern web development stack (backend: Python, Ruby, Java, Go; frontend: Typescript, React, GraphQL)
- Deep sense of independence and ownership
- Strong problem-solving skills, with the ability to incorporate feedback into iterative work
- Familiarity designing and publishing service APIs for internal and external integration
- Exposure to the design, maintenance, and scaling of relational databases
Nice to Have
- Strong coding skills in Python
- Exposure to unit and integration testing frameworks
- Completion of at least one full product development lifecycle, including deployment, support, and maintenance
- Familiarity with developing software for use in a strictly regulated environment
- Experience with device interfaces, especially those of scientific instrumentation
- Experience collaborating cross-functionally with biochemists, AI/ML experts, and business development/marketing teams
